EXTRA - BACKGROUND
Book of Joel
The Book of Joel is a prophetic text in the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament. It consists of four chapters (Joel 1-4) and is attributed to Joel, son of Pethuel. The book’s central theme is a call to repentance and a promise of salvation, emphasizing the importance of turning to God during times of calamity.
Historical Context
The exact date of Joel’s prophecy is unknown, but it is likely set during the period of Ezra-Nehemiah, after the return from exile (around 520-400 BCE). The book mentions Jerusalem and the temple, but not a kingdom, suggesting a post-exilic setting.
Content
The Book of Joel can be divided into three main sections:
Joel 1-2: A description of a devastating locust plague and its consequences, followed by a call to repentance and a plea for God’s intervention.
Joel 2:28-32: A promise of a future “day of the Lord,” characterized by God’s outpouring of His Spirit upon all flesh, and a restoration of creation.
Joel 3: A prophecy of judgment against the nations and a call to God’s people to return to Him, emphasizing the importance of justice and righteousness.
Literary Features
The Book of Joel employs various literary devices, including:
Imagery: vivid descriptions of natural disasters, such as locusts and drought.
Allusion: references to other biblical texts, including Isaiah, Amos, Zephaniah, and Exodus.
Rhetorical questions: Joel asks questions to engage his audience and emphasize the uniqueness of the events described.
Metaphor: comparisons between God’s judgment and natural phenomena, such as a “day of the Lord” and a “great and terrible day.”
Significance
The Book of Joel has been influential in Christian tradition, with its themes of repentance and salvation echoed in the New Testament. Specifically:
The outpouring of God’s Spirit described in Joel 2:28-32 is quoted by Peter in Acts 2:16-21, describing the events of Pentecost.
Joel’s prophecy of a future “day of the Lord” has been interpreted by some as a precursor to the Second Coming of Christ.
